Pleased To Meet Me:Roy Vucino

Introduce yourself… (Where are you from, what band do you play in etc..)
Born in Istanbul, Turkey and grew up in Montreal. I presently play in Red Mass, Nightseeker and Birds of Paradise.

Why do you play music? Basically replacing my more destructive obsessions and tendencies with a healthier obsession with writing and recording.

What was a major influence on you as an Artist/Band? Writer and chaos magician Grant Morrison and Mike Watt who i got a chance to record and make music with. Watt's concept albums and his willingness to work with us even though at the time he had no idea who we were was a huge influence on me. Coolest dude ever.

What's your ideal festival line-up? This will be all over the place but here goes: Ennio Morricone, McCoy Tyner, Chris Knox, Guided by Voices, Rihanna performing 'Anti', Frank Ocean, Dolly Parton, Kate Bush, Iron Maiden, Shabazz Palaces, The Rebel, Jean-Michel Jarre, Dark Throne, Judas Priest, Drive like Jehu, Wolfbrigade and Peter Brötzman.

Do you prefer the recording process or performing live Recording for sure.

What would be a dream collaboration? Brian Eno or I'd love to play in a band with Kim Gordon. Also I'd love to write punk/noise rock over a killer beat maker like Ski Mask The Slump God, Clams Casino or Spaceghost Purpp.

Describe a favourite album. 'Black Woman' by Sonny Sharrock blows my mind every time i listen to it. This to me is 'true' americana, with its western motifs mixed in with gospel and american free jazz. It sounds like Ennio Morricone composing with the Art ensemble of Chicago. Sharrock is my fav guitarist ever. Check out his later & heavier band with Peter Brotzman 'Last Exit' to see this man's genius and range.

What's your favourite local haunt? I do love Escogriffe, it's a classic.

What's your strangest experience while performing live? Someone getting thrown through the window while i played, someone rubbing a dead pigeon on my bleeding arms during a show, people destroying the bar (smashing every table and chair in the house before throwing mannequins in the ceiling fan). Lighting my friend on fire and thinking i almost scarred him for life. I played in fairly wild live projects so i could keep going.

What are some of your favourite aspects of being a musician in Montreal? It's kind of a wild city so there's good parties, folks are usually pretty open and experimental music thrives here. Oh and it's pretty affordable.

If you weren’t playing music in Montreal where would you be ? Playing music wherever i'd be, in whatever parallel universe i'd find myself in. Every Roy in every multiverse is rocking out.

Any sage advice for young musicians? Always keep in mind why you initially started playing music. For me, it was definitely to have fun, to be creative and to communicate with people. Don't let anyone or anything kill that vibe. Also play with tons of people and travel with your art, that's the jam.
