Go-Go L' Esco: Hot Garbage

On January 19, 2019, Toronto’s Hot Garbage rolled into our favourite local venue, L’ Escogriffe, to take part in an evening of music put together by the good people at DISTORTON and Analogue Addiction.

Hot Garbage are purveyors of a kind of psychedelic rock that is equal parts propulsive, meditative and unhinged exploration. The band have released two EP’s, 2017’s Max Blonda, and since the filming of this interview, 2019’s Coco’s Paradise and played many festivals this past year including Friend Ship 2019, Oscillitarium Music Lab Vol 4, Crystal Lake ‘19 as well as touring Canada and the United States. Hot Garbage continues this momentum with upcoming appearances including Hollowfest 2019 (Sept. 20-22), POP Montreal (Sept. 26, at L’ Esco!) and Death To T.O #9 (Nov.1).

We invited the band to sit down prior to their performance to answer a few questions.

During their set, Hot Garbage preview two new songs, 100 and Dome from Coco’s Paradise, which at the time of filming, had not yet been released. These songs carry on the band’s sonic footprint, 100 pulses with sinister momentum, propelling itself into the void. Dome sounds both urgent and ethereal, guitars cut through the mist hovering over the rhythm section’s rippled waves. Three songs from Max Blonda round out the band’s set. Including a downright thunderous version of Mystic Muffin and a hypnotizing finale in Snow Tigers.
