GGRMS Oct. 8, 2021 w Adrian Popovich / Tricky Woo
A very special episode of The Go-Go Radio Magic Show…
I honour of the recent Blow The Fuse Records / Bonsound reissues of Tricky Woo’s Rock and Roll Music Part One , The Enemy Is Real and Sometimes I Cry we welcome Adrian Popovich for the entirety of the show.
We celebrate Tricky Woo, a band that to me, defined the city of Montreal and my time in it as a younger man. I first attended a Tricky Woo show because their (then) bass player Eric, was dating my girlfriend, (now wife)Lee-Ann's sister, Raylene.
Eric and I would eventually live together, an experience that gifted me a lifelong friend and one of the best roommates I ever had, but also gave me a behind the scenes glimpse of what it was like to be in a band in Montreal in the late 1990's.
When Eric would go on tour, I would skip class and explore his turntable and his vinyl collection, discovering sounds and artists that fell outside the lines of popular consumption, opening the door to a lifetime of abusing headphones. I think Eric's copy of Patti Smith's Radio Ethiopia is worn through on the track Strange...
Although, not the first local band I had seen, Tricky Woo's impact still reverberates.
Tricky Woo's performances werer incendiary and connect me to a time where I felt indestructable, I required no sleep and survived off of dollar pizza, muffins, coffee and beer.... and those opening bars of Altamount Raven could exorcise that restlessness of youth ... everytime.
