Pleased To Meet Me: Alexandre Larin of Larynx
Introduce yourself… (Where are you from, what band do you play in etc..)
My name is Alexandre Larin, I’m from St-Eustache and I play guitar in a few bands including Rust Eden, Helena Deland, Léona, Lucill, Gregoncel and Delirium Desh. My latest project is Larynx.
Why do you play music?
Mostly because it’s fun! There’s something really special about connecting with bandmates and finding the right part for a song. I love the whole teamwork thing in music. Also, it helps me with my mental health.
What was a major influence on you as an Artist/Band?
My whole family is into music, grand-parents included. It was a no-brainer for me to navigate in this world. My dad is a good music lover. He introduced me to a lot of good stuff!
What's your ideal festival line-up?
In a world where all those bands are still together or alive: Sonic Youth, Ariel Pink, Parquet Courts, Chocolat, DEVO, Pavement, Kenny G (plugged into a violent fuzz pedal)
Do you prefer the recording process or performing live?
I prefer the recording process because it’s comfy and I’m a lazy ass. Also, I don’t enjoy crowds in small places. I still enjoy the rush of a good show, but home recording, I could do it every day.
What would be a dream collaboration?
I would love to do something with Jimmy Hunt. He’s one of the reasons why I’m singing in french!
Describe a favourite album.
It’s kind of resent but I looooove Jazz Engagé by Chocolat. This album is perfectly weird. It goes everywhere and the lyrics are way out! Every time I leave Montreal I’m listening to this album in the car.
What's your favourite local haunt?
Got to say l’esco! A classic!
What's your strangest experience while performing live?
With Rust Eden, a few years ago, we did a show at Le Zaricot in Ste-Hyacinthe. I don’t know how or why, but I forgot to bring my capo. A friend in the crowd (there was maybe 10 people) went on stage to block my fret with his finger the whole song. It worked! But his finger was all red and fucked up after that.
What are some of your favourite aspects of being a musician in Montreal?
Prior to COVID, there was always a lot of things going on every week. Shows, album releases… The scene is really diversified and it’s easy to make friends.
Has the current COVID-19 pandemic and quarantine influenced your creative process?
Not that much, I have always been recording at home nice and easy. So now it’s just 100% home all the time. But I miss my friends and that probably influences my inspiration.
If you weren’t playing music in Montreal where would you be?
Probably Berlin. I feel like the scene there is really open and active!
Any sage advice for young musicians?
Don’t forget to stay focused on why you started doing music. It’s easy to fall into bad vibes with all the business side of it. Keep the fire alive!
